Counterfeit Crochet Date: January 15, 2018 Category Case Study Topic Political Critique Counterfeit Crochet was an open source fueled exhibition created by artist stephanie syjuco. Syjuco set up a crochet workshop in which visitors could come and crochet bags from popular luxury brands, such as Louis Vuitton or Burberry. To assemble the patterns used in the workshop Syjuco created a website and put our a call to crocheters around the world. The website was a place for people to share new patterns as well as the outcomes of their work. Syjuco is often concerned with artisanship. She has multiple works in which she remakes mass produced objects in a handmade and crafty way. What I like most about Syjuco’s work is that she is able to make a statement about authorship and capitalism without doing so directly. She leaves room for the visitor of the website or the exhibition to create their own meaning. I find this to be an excellent approach and I hope to move closer to this going forward.
